BJP expels gun-toting MLA for six years

Thursday, 18 July 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

Taking serious cognisance of indiscipline by Khanpur MLA Pranav Singh ‘Champion’, the Bharatiya Janata Party has expelled him for a period of six years. The decision has been taken by the party’s central disciplinary committee in the wake of the viral clip of the MLA seen dancing drunk toting guns and using abusive language.

The BJP state media in-charge Devendra Bhasin informed that earlier, the MLA had been suspended for three months from the party for allegedly threatening a journalist. After the latest video clip went viral, the suspension was extended to an indefinite period and he was served a show cause notice and given 10 days to reply. The explanation provided by the MLA was not found to be satisfactory by the party’s central disciplinary committee. Hence, taking serious cognisance of his actions, he was expelled from the party for six years. The party’s national general secretary Arun Singh also issued a letter to this effect. Both the central and state leadership of the party took serious cognisance of the MLA’s actions and words in the video clip which recently went viral.

It will be recalled here that though the Khanpur MLA has been involved in controversies in the past too, the latest video clip which went viral had caused much embarrassment to the BJP. It showed the MLA dancing to a movie song with three handguns and a carbine in his hands while sipping liquor and using abusive language while also referring to Uttarakhand. The MLA had claimed that the video clip was old and tampered with. He had claimed that it was a conspiracy by his detractors. However, such explanations did not carry weight with the party leadership.
