Civic bodies step up awareness drive against use of plastic

Intensifying its drive against plastic, all three corporations have stepped up awareness campaign to discourage people to use plastic in daily life. 

At least 3,000 Kg of polythene bags of less than 50 microns in thickness have been seized by the corporation in August this year.

 North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Sunday launched an awareness campaign in all its wards. A senior NMC official said that the corporation has constituted a dedicated team to visit all the wards of Corporation and aware people about the environmental hazards of using plastic.

 “The public in all 104 wards of the corporation will be discouraged the use of plastic made items like bags,

glasses, spoon, straw, decorative material, packing material and plastic bottles etc,” the official said.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has seized about 500 kgs of polythene in August alone. However, South Corporation seized 904 kg polythene bags and issued 23 challans in South Zone.

Chairperson of south zone Tulsi Joshi had distributed distributed Jute and cotton bags in the weekly markets of RK Puram ward in order to create awareness among people.

 She also appealed to the shopkeepers and hawkers not to use polythene bags less than 50 microns in thickness.

Chairman of Standing Committee in SDMC, Dr Bhupender Gupta also took round of Vani Vihar under west zone to take stock of the status of sanitation activities and disseminate information to reduce use of plastic.

“The indiscriminate use of plastic is detrimental to the nature as well as to the health of the citizens. It is need of the hour to avoid using especially single use plastic,” he said. Gupta exhorted the residents to make use of bags made of paper, cloth and jute instead of plastic bags.
