Cong protest over power, water woes

Wednesday, 19 June 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

In the wake of ‘severe’ power and water shortage in the national Capital, Delhi Congress staged sit in all the 70 Assembly constituencies on Tuesday and reiterated that the Delhi Government should wake up from its slumber to address the prevailing issues.

Party president who Sheila Dikshit participated in the dharna at Ratiya Marg in Sangam Vihar Assembly constituency said that the city residents have been reeling under “frequent power cuts and water shortage during peak summers but the Government is in a deep slumber”. “It’s a matter of life and death. The water and power shortage has affected the women, the elderly and the poor the most,” she said.

Addressing the gathering, Dikshit accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government of not being able to come up with a contingency plan to address the issues. “People are fed up with frequent power cuts and severe water shortage in these peak summer days but the AAP Government has done nothing to address the problem,” she said.

A Congress delegation led by Dikshit had recently met Chief Minister Kejriwal at his Flagstaff Road residence where they discussed issues related to water and power supply, and demanded withdrawal of fixed charge hike in electricity bills.

Party’s prominent leaders participated in the protest including Congress working presidents Haroon Yusuf, Rajesh Lilothia, Devender Yadav, former Delhi Minister Dr Yoganand Shastri, Mangat Ram Singhal, spokesperson Jitender Kumar Kochar (Jitu)

Haroon Yusuf, who staged a protest in the Ballimaran Assembly constituency, claimed that drinking water being supplied in many areas was unfit for consumption. He said that people have to wait for days together to get potable water but the AAP Government was unmoved by the plight of the poor people,

Congress working presidents Rajesh Lilothia who led the protest at Gurudwara Road, near Bikaner Wala Chowk, Arya Samaj Road, Karol Bagh, New Delhi and Model Town, said that despite the power companies fleecing the consumers in the name of fixed charges and pension funds, power cuts are frequent across the city.

Reacting to the protests, AAP leader Gopal Rai said, “I would like Sheila ji to compare what she did to deal with the water crisis in her 15-year-rule with what the AAP has done in just four and a half years.
