Thursday, 05 September 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

In a bid to reduce air pollution by taking off millions of vehicle from the road of national Capital, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has decided to execute the  "Delhi Cycle walk" project to areas and corridors connecting forest areas and densely populated areas such as Tuglaqabad, Greater Kailash (GK), Nehru Place, Delhi Secretariat. In the phase I these 33km long corridors will be provided tracks for walking and cycling.

The main objective behind this project is to reduce and allow people to walk and cycle safely especially on a pedestrian safe walk ability area.

A meeting was also held on Wednesday by the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and DDA to implement the project with proper planning.

Baijal asked DDA brass to have discussion with the help of field experts, Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and Forest Department to implement the project soon for the safety and security of pedestrians.

According the project plan, this walk-ability corridor will be connected to major points such as ring road, metro stations, bus stands, high density residential areas, business districts, industrial districts, recreational districts, educational districts, master plan greens and other important areas.

With this plan, the DDA is aiming to make the city connected to forests and lakes.

"It will be a safer and greener alternative to mobility that would reduce the vehicular load of the city, provide last mile connectivity, and connect residential areas with metro stations and bus stands. It would also allow citizens to save money on the last mile commute which currently is the most expensive per km charge of the journey," said a DDA official.

Both the walking and cycling track will be interlinked on grade and elevated tracks which will cover with saplings and plants.

"At a few places where Master plan greens do not about residential origination points or destination points, and to connect the broken fabric, elevated tracks will be planned alongside master plan roads.

No trees would be disturbed and the track would meander around the existing trees. It will provide a last mile connectivity for the commuters," said the official.
