Scores of poor people in Subarnapur district have been leading a miserable life after they were left out of Government housing benefits.

Locals in Jaloe panchayat under Ullunda block alleged that no housing benefit would be made available to eligible people unless they have political affiliation and they pay bribe.

Here is a glaring case of anomaly reported from Karnapali in Jaloe gram panchayat. A poor family is living in a toilet made under the Swachha Bharat Mission.

Reports said, Rasanand Padhan has been maintaining his family of two sons and wife by working as a labourer. On a day, heavy rain rendered the family homeless and forced them to stay inside a toilet.

Jayanti Padhan, wife of Rasananda, said that she, her husband, two sons and a daughter had gone to take shelter at a safe place during the time of heavy rain. When the storm and rain stopped they returned to their house, but found that the thatched house had caved in. With no other option, the family was forced to move into a toilet that was built under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan."What can we do? Fate played a cruel joke and we were forced to take shelter in a toilet," said Jayanti with tearful eyes.

The family has sealed the toilet pan with plastic bag, cleaned its floor and has been staying in it with some clothes.

"My parents will spend their remaining days in the toilet.Our future is bleak as we are not sure wheather we would be able to continue our education," said Soubhagya, a son of Kauanti and Rasananda.

Rasananda said, "I am tired of doing rounds of the Panchayat and block offices pleading for a housing unit,but my pleas have fallen on deaf ears."

Though the names of the couple have been enlisted in the Socio Economic Survey Report, they have not been eligible to get a housing unit.

Locals demanded immediate intervention of the district administration in the matter and provide a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to the family.CPGA
