EC steps up vigil to check illegal means to influence voters

The Election Commission is keeping a tab on sale of illegal liquor and distribution of jewelries and precious items that have been banned by it ahead of Lok Sabha elections. 

After receiving directions from chief electoral officer Subrat Sahoo, flying squads formed by the district electoral officers conducted search operations and raids in various districts of the state on Wednesday.

Till now the squads seized cash worth Rs 39.93 Lakh. Cases have also been registered against the accused under relevant sections, official sources informed.

Sahoo further assured that monitoring and checking exercises would continue to ensure free and fair polls..

Official sources in the CEO’s office informed that a joint team of police, excise and income tax was conducting the extensive checking exercise. As per information, till March 18, 1461 liters of illicit liquor worth Rs 3.06 Lakh had been confiscated.

 The team also seized illegal laptops, vehicles, sarees, pressure cooker etc worth Rs 14.34 Lakh, they added.
