A person was killed by an elephant at village Dhaunradadar, 27 km from here, in the Loisingha forest early in morning on Saturday while he had gone to his paddy field to guard his crop.

The deceased was identified as Sriram Biswal (40). According to reports, a herd of seven elephants was moving in the area since last few days.

Balangir Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Sameer Satpathy said, “Last night, our elephant watcher tracked the animals’ presence on the other side of the Cheliapat Reserve Forest. A lone tusker crossing over the mountain moved into the area and trampled Sitaram to death.”

“We have sent our staffs to the spot. We will give 10 per cent of  the total compassionate amount to the family of deceased after due procedure,” said the DFO.
