The Regional Office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here on Thursday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in northern and coastal districts of Odisha on account of a cyclonic circulation over West Bengal that lies centred over Jharkhand.

“Under the impact of the cyclonic circulation, monsoon is active in Odisha. Several parts of north Odisha would experience light to moderate rainfall while heavy to very heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Angul and Deogarh districts for next 24 hours,” said IMD Regional Director HR Biswas.

Biswas further informed that heavy rains are also likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Baleswar Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Khordha, Jajpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Bargarh, Subarnapur and Koraput in the next 24 hours.

Several parts of the State experienced heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. Hemagiri in Sundargarh district recorded highest rainfall of 156mm, followed by 134.6 mm in Jharsuguda and 103 mm in Sambalpur.

As the weather condition would remain rough, fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours. “Though the intensity of rainfall would decrease after 48 hours, light to moderate rainfall would occur at several parts of the State,” Biswas added.
