The state government on Tuesday tweaked its earlier order on serving eggs in mid-day meal saying in those schools where there were reservations among some parents over serving this non-vegetarian food, it should be served to the willing students at their home.
The School education department through a clarification made the changes to its earlier order on inclusion of eggs in the mid-day meal menu after a religious sect opposed the government’s move saying it was hurting religious sentiment of its followers.
The department also asked the district collectors to instruct the schools to immediately call a meeting of Shala Vikas Samitis to sort out the issue.
“If there is no consensus in the meeting of Shala Vikas Samiti (which consists of parents of the students apart from public representatives) then the eggs must be served to those students who opt for it at their homes”, the department instructed.
The department also instructed that separate utensils must be used for cooking of eggs for the mid-day meal and there should be separate sitting arrangements for vegetarian and non-vegetarian students.
It also instructed to serve vegetarian students soya milk, protein crunch, fortified biscuits, fortified soyabadis, and cooked fortified pulses as an alternative to eggs.
