report sought from Amritsar SSP, CS in rape case
Chandigarh: Punjab State Women Commission, taking strong note of the matter casting serious aspirations on the role of district’s police and district health authorities for not conducting the medical examination of the rape victims even after four days of the incident, on Tuesday sought detailed reports from Amritsar (Rural) SSP, and Amritsar Civil Surgeon by August 26. “The reports alleged that the Police, instead of doing its duty, was exerting pressure on the victim for compromise with the opposite party,” said the Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati. She said that Amritsar Civil Surgeon was also directed to explain that why the victim was sent to Ajnala to procure the medical kit for medical examination which is 20 kilometres away from Amritsar. Likewise, the report was sought from Amritsar Rural Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) by August 26.
PU VC meets Union Minister of State
Chandigarh: Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University met Somparkash Kainth, Union Minister of State (Commerce & Industry) at New Delhi. He discussed various proposals regarding sanction of developmental grant for the upliftment of existing infrastructure to meet the contemporary developmental needs of this heritage institution of higher education. He also informed him that PU is most sought after University for North Eastern students and PU is considering special facilities for the same for which, extra grants are required. The Minister assured of all help.
Vigilance nabs document writer for taking bribe
Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau has nabbed a document writer red handed while accepting bribe of Rs . 12,000. A spokesperson said Pawan Shahi, a document writer at Payal, Ludhiana district was nabbed red handed by Vigilance team for accepting bribe ofRs 12,000 from complainant Paramjeet Singh of modal town extension Ludhiana city. The complainant had approached the VB and alleged that the above said document writer was demanding Rs 15,000 for helping him for getting the registry done of a plot in his father’s name. A case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at VB police station Ludhiana and further investigations is under progress.

Akshay Urja celebrations held
Chandigarh: The Government Home Science College celebrated Akshay Urja Diwas in order to sensitize young generation regarding the need of harnessing renewable sources of energy while conserving renewable ones by various creative media. Various Inter-college and intra-college competitions were held namely Poster Making, OHP Sheet Painting, Placard Making, Face Painting, Poetry recitation, Group song and T-Shirt Painting on the theme "Impact of Akshay Urja in India". About 125 students from 11 Government and Private Colleges of Chandigarh participated in various competitions.
PGIMER hosts ASCO
Chandigarh: PGIMER hosted a two-member team from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The team members were Kristine B. LeFebvre from the Oncology Nursing Society, Pittsburgh (USA) and. Lori Buswell, Executive Director, Center for Global Cancer Medicine, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston (USA). This visit was in the context of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last year between PGIMER and ASCO with the aim of improving cancer care services as well as training and research in the field of cancer at PGIMER.
Research Peace Award for PU Faculty
Chandigarh: Prof. Rajinder Jindal, Department of Zoology, Panjab University has been awarded Research Peace Award 2019 as International Best Researcher in Limnology, Environmental Biology and Fish Toxicology by International Journal for Research under Literal Access(RULA) in association with World Research Council & United Medical Council, ceremony held at Hotel Breeze Residency, Trichy (Tamil Nadu).
Street Food Vendors’ Hygiene training held
Chandigarh: Tenth capacity building and training workshop was jointly organized by Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER and Municipal Corporation Chandigarh at City Livelihood Centre, Community Sewa Kendra, Sector 25 here. 20 registered street vendors attended the same. The vendors received free ‘Street Food Vendors’ Hygiene Kit’ which included aprons, gloves, head covers and easy to understand IEC material. They also received free medical checkup by the doctors of Community Medicine, PGIMER.
