Karni Bharni’, staged at Madhya Pradesh State Tribal Museum

A play based on the Bundelkhand folktale Karni Bharni’, was staged at Madhya Pradesh State Tribal Museum on Friday. The play was all about a saying ‘What You Sow, So Shall You Reap.’

Scripted, directed and conceptualised by Rajkumar Raiekwar and the play is presented in Swang style of Bundelkhand by Rang Prayog Theatre Group, Sagar.

It narrates a story of two families Panna-Phullo and Lambardar-Kallo who live in a village. Panna and his wife Phullo belong to poor family who has a buffalo, Gori. They look after gori very well so that she used to give milk 10 litres in morning and evening daily and she becomes very popular in village.

On other hand, there is another family of Lambardar and (Zamindar) and his wife Kallo who has 10 buffaloes but don’t give so much milk like Gori. Even they left their buffaloes under their servants. So they are unable to digest the popularity of Guari.  Also Lambardar has to bear the taunts of Kallo due to Gori.

So, one day, Lambardar kills gori to become annoy from his wife taunts. Panna and his wife Phullo break down to see the death body of Gori. After that they decide to sell the skin of Gori in market. Panna goes market to sell but he unable. So, he thinks to return home. But he got late in returning spends night on tree in forest. Suddenly some robbers come and left their booty there. When Lambardar came to know that Panna got lot of money in exchange of the dead skin of his buffalo then he kill his all buffaloes in greed of money. Later, Lambardar repents on his foolishness.

The play begins and ends with Rai dance of Bundlekhand. In between narrator narrates the story.  Algoza (a kind of flute), mridang, mridangiya, dholak, manjeera, jhula were used as musical instruments that created tuneful folk music of Bundelkhand and added the special charm in play.
