Live feeds from classrooms

Sunday, 07 July 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday launched a project for CCTV camera installation in all Government schools in the national Capital. While launching the project at Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Lajpat Nagar, Kerjiwal said all 1,000 Government schools will be equipped with CCTV cameras by November this year.

"Delhi Government today took a landmark step for safety of teachers and students in schools with inauguration of CCTV pilot project in a government school. It will also make the whole system transparent and accountable. Soon all government schools will have CCTV cameras in classes," said Kejriwal.

"There are many schools across the world where CCTV cameras are being installed, but perhaps this is the first instance where live feeds from every classroom are being provided to parents through a mobile app," the CM added.

The Government will soon launch a mobile app — 'DGS Live' app through the parents can keep a track on their children and the teachers. The parents can download the said app from Google Play store.

Addressing concerns of some over privacy, Kejriwal said, "Children do not come to school for any private activity. Children come here to learn, to be disciplined, to become ideal citizens, to become good human beings. Where is the question of a breach of privacy? Children, parents, teachers — none of the stakeholders have such concerns."

Kejriwal said the CCTVs will ensure direct answerability of the government towards people. "We would not provide live feed to the parents if the schools were not running properly," he said, adding that the cameras will also ensure children's safety and instill discipline in them.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya has become the country's first government school to have CCTV camera coverage.

"There are some mischievous children in schools who disturb all other children. Some who leave for school from home, but then skip all classes. Now these activities can be curbed. Children will have to maintain discipline and decorum in school. Children come to school to learn," said Sisodia.

The CM and Deputy CM further interacted with few parents who supported the move. Citing various benefits of the CCTV cameras, he claimed students and teachers also supported the move.

As part of the project, two CCTV cameras will be installed in each classroom. Entire school premises, barring the washrooms, will be under 360 degree coverage of the cameras and their feed will be monitored from a control room.
