Massive beach cleanup drives involving thousands of volunteers were undertaken at different locations in Puri district on the occasion of the International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) on Saturday.
The district administration initiated the campaign under the banner of its “Mo Beach” cleaning programme.
The students and volunteers were found joining in large numbers to clean the beaches near Ramachandi Temple, Konark and Astarang area along the coastline across the district. “We have joined the programme to keep our beach clean. We will continue our efforts to keep the beach clean not only for today but also every day,” said Self-Help Group (SHG) women at Konark.
More than 10,000 social activists gathered at the Puri sea beach to be part of the cleanup drive on ICCD, which is one of the world’s largest annual preservation and protection events and volunteer efforts for oceans and beaches.
Bollywood actor Vidyut Jammwal joined the cleaning programme at the Puri beach. He addressed his fans and volunteers to cheer them.
“My film “Junglee” had its set in Odisha. Today I visited Puri for the world’s largest coastal cleanup. @Naveen_Odisha @odisha_tourism. One of the most beautiful places in the country. A MUST VISIT #MoBeachPuri. Kudos to the State for keeping it clean and safe,” he tweeted.
