No clean chit to Kafeel: Govt

Friday, 04 October 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government has clarified that Dr Kafeel Ahmed Khan, the suspended paediatrician of BRD Medical College hospital who has been charged in connection with the death of children at BRDMC hospital in August 2017, has not been given clean chit.

Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Rajneesh Dube said here on Thursday that Dr Kafeel was spreading lies that he had been exonerated in the case relating to death of over 30 children in one night on August 10-11, 2017 in the encephalitis ward because of lack of oxygen.

The Principal Secretary said that departmental proceedings were recommended in four cases against Dr Khan after he was found prima facie guilty in the incident at BRD Medical College hospital.

“The charge against Dr Khan of engaging in private practice and operating a private nursing home while holding the position of senior resident and regular spokesperson in government service, was proved. A final decision has not yet been taken by the government on the other two charges,” he added.

He said that the two charges on which Dr Khan had been found guilty were of serious corruption and gross violation of rules.

It has been mentioned in the report that while in government service Dr Kafeel was doing private practice at Medispring Hospital and Research Centre, Rustampur, Gorakhpur. He continued the private  practice even after he was occupying the post of spokesperson of the Department of Paediatrics.

The Principal Secretary said that during the suspension period, Dr Khan attempted to treat patients by forcibly entering the paediatric department of district hospital in Bahraich with three-four outsiders on September 22, 2018, causing panic in the hospital .

“This act, combined with the act of circulating misleading information in the media, comes under the category of very serious misconduct,” he said.

“For these reasons, another departmental enquiry has been ordered against him, and the allegations include indiscipline, corruption, gross negligence in duty,” Dube said.

Thus, a total of seven charges against him are still under process, he added.

On this occasion, Chief Minister’s Information Adviser Mrityunjay Kumar and Director of Information and Public Relations Department Shishir were present.
