Distressed over months-long ostracism from village, a poor family of Khordha district has sought euthanasia.
This is reported from Masania village under Begunia block where Jay Krushna Sahoo and his family have appealed to the district Collector seeking euthanasia, also called ‘mercy killing’.
Reports said Jay Krushna along with his family roamed on village streets after forcible possession of his homestead land by neighbourers. He moved the tehsil office and district Collectorate to claim ownership of the land. However, his efforts went in vain.
Later, he staged a hunger strike in front of the tehsil office seeking justice. Even as the tehsildar assured him to solve the matter, Jay Krushna waited for long days to take into his possession of the homestead land.
Finally, the villagers ostracised him and his family from the village.
“We are banned to avail basic facilities at the village. Even restriction has been imposed on us to enter into the village temple. Our daughter is denied education after we fought for justice,” Jay Krushna said.
“The tehsildar promised us to look into our grievance but failed to take steps against the encroachers. As we are harassed and disappointed after approaching the authorities for justice, we seek permission from the Collector to end our lives,” he said.
