Policy needed to regulate school traffic: Doon SSP

Saturday, 17 August 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

With several new traffic plans set up in the district, citizens have been facing traffic woes at different places. The people have been complaining about not being informed about the route diversion plans in advance.

Especially during school hours commuters have to face traffic related problems near Buddha Chowk, Clock Tower and Rispana Bridge.

On the other hand, district police have generated a WhatsApp number through which citizens can give suggestions or lodge complaints regarding traffic problems. Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arun Mohan Joshi said, “It was not because of the newly implemented plans that the traffic issues were seen in the district. It was basically because of the heavy rainfall.

The water logging situations on many roads made the width of the road comparatively small.

Also, because of the rain most of the parents who usually use two wheelers to pick their children from school came in four wheelers, because of which we had to face heavy flow of traffic during school closing time in the afternoon.”

When asked about the traffic congestion faced daily during school closing time he said, “I have spoken with the education secretary on Friday. It is important to make a policy regarding the transportation of school students so that they only use school bus or vans. I have asked them to call for a meeting in order to make such policy in which we will also participate.”

It is pertinent to mention here that after taking cognisance of the suggestions and complaints district police is receiving regarding the traffic issues, SSP Joshi has instructed Superintendent of Police (traffic) Prakash Chandra Arya to inspect the areas where citizens have to face traffic congestion on daily basis.

It is also important to highlight here that the SSP has been working on a new traffic plan for Dehradun. He had earlier stated that trials are needed in order to study choke points and those areas in the district which have heavy traffic flow.
