Regional parties bite dust in LS polls

Saturday, 25 May 2019 | Roshan Kumar | Ranchi

The BJP-led NDA obliterated the Grand Alliance in State, demolishing the regional satraps who dominated State politics for more than four decades. Led by the Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) and Lalu Prasad’s RJD had formed Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan). All four parties, having influence in different pockets of the State, were seen as force which could challenge NDA in State, but in the Tsunami of Modi wave, all these parties were wiped out.

JMM patriarch and party chief Shibu Soren who had represented Dumka for eight times and was eying to enter Lok Sabha for ninth times failed to create history as he lost to BJP’s Sunil Soren, who was in the fray against JMM chief for the third time.

Santhal Pargana, which is considered as JMM bastion, comprises three Lok Sabha seats—Dumka, Rajmahal and Godda, having 18 assembly segments, out of which the Grand Alliance had 12 MLAs. Out of three seats in Santhal JMM was able to save only Rajmahal seat. From Godda, JVM candidate Pradeep Yadav supported by Grand Alliance party too suffered defeat in the hands of BJP’s Nishikant Dubey.

The JMM, which has 19 MLAs in assembly had contested four seats—Dumka, Rajmahal, Giridih and Jamshedpur. But the party was successful in winning only Rajmahal seat. From Jamshedpur and Giridih the party had fielded senior leader and three times MLA Champai Soren and three times MLA Jagarnath Mahato, but both these leaders failed to keep their party’s expectations.

The JMM after the defeat had decided to do brainstorming. JMM general secretary, Supriyo Bhattacharya said, “The Lok Sabha election results are shocking for us. We will try to find out the reason behind the defeat at the same we will avenge the defeat of Gurujee in Dumka by winning all 18 seats of Santhal Pargana in year-end Assembly elections.”

The results was also shocking for JVM and its party chief Babulal Marandi. Marandi the first chief minister of State after snapping ties with BJP in 2006 formed Jharkhand Vikas Morcha. The party this had contested two seats Koderma and Godda. From Koderma JVM chief which had earlier represented the seat thrice, but in the Modi magic he too lost the seat with the margin of 4.55 lakh. Godda the other seat from where party general secretary and founding member of party Pradeep Yadav was contesting too failed to win the seat. Godda was one the seat which witnessed much internal bickering within Grand Alliance in State as Congress Furqan Ansari too was claimant of seat.

RJD, the other regional party, which too was in electoral fray in State bite the dust in the elections. The RJD had contested on two seats Chatra and Palamu, but the party failed to even open the account in the State. Chatra seat too saw differences between RJD and Congress, with both the party going for friendly fight.

From Chatra the RJD candidate Subhash Yadav had worked in the area for more than a year and despite differences in State leadership he was given the ticket as he had blessing of Lalu-Rabri, but he remained third.

The RJD had also contested from Palamu seat, but its candidate Ghuran Ram lost to BJP’s VD Ram by the margin of 4.77 lakh margin.
