RINPAS celebrates 94th foundation day

Thursday, 05 September 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

Ranchi Institute of Neuro Psychiatry and Allied Sciences (RINPAS), one of the leading tertiary care centres in Eastern India, celebrated its 94th Foundation Day on Wednesday in presence of eminent psychiatrists and change makers from across the State.

Addressing the Foundation Day ceremony at RINPAS’ auditorium in Kanke, Health Minister Ramchandra Chandravanshi stressed the importance of mental health in an ever so fast growing world, where people are constantly striving for progress. Chandravanshi congratulated doctors and staff of RINPAS on the institute’s completion of 94 years and said that the institute has played a pivotal role in addressing mental health issues since the day of its establishment. “RINPAS is synonymous with mental health. It is one of the oldest institutes exclusively catering to neuro psychiatric patients and has been doing a commendable job for nearly a century,” he said.

Chandravanshi on Wednesday released a souvenir of the institute, which highlights all the achievements of the institute and the various kinds of mental illnesses affecting people these days. The souvenir also carries a section where doctors have given a detailed analysis of substance abuse and how it leads to mental illnesses. Chandravanshi also gave away awards to the best performing wards.

The Foundation Day ceremony was also attended by Kanke Legislator Jeetu Charan Ram, Director of Central Institute of Psychiatry, Dr. D Ram and former RINPAS Director Dr. Amool Ranjan. Ram lauded the contribution of psychiatrists and other health professionals in keeping the society healthy and saving lives. Addressing the gathering, the Legislator recalled Swami Vivekananda’s words, “Nar Seva Hi Narayan Seva hai (To serve man is to serve God),” and said, “Depression is a major mental illness affecting thousands of people these days. At a time when mental health has become the most talked about issue in the world, RINPAS’ contribution in the health sector here needs a special mention.”

Director of RINPAS, Subhash Soren, said that all the staff and doctors of the institute work as a team to ensure best possible facilities to the patients. The Outdoor Patient Ward (OPD) here witnesses a rush of patients every day and doctors do their best to pay proper attention to each of the patients, he added.

The institute started operating out of Ranchi with only 110 patients on September 4, 1925. After Independence, this hospital came under State of Bihar and on August 30, 1958 its name was changed from Indian Mental Hospital to Ranchi Mansik Arogyashala (RMA). On January 10, 1998 the name of RMA was changed to Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry & Allied Sciences (RINPAS).
