State initiates steps to relax road rules

Friday, 13 September 2019 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Following the public outrage over levying of heavy fines, the State Government has started taking steps for relaxation of the new road rules.

Transport Secretary G Srinivas has written to DGP BK Sharma urging the latter for non-compounding of offences during vehicle checking.

But usage of mobile phones while driving and drunken driving would remain compoundable.

“You are requested to kindly take necessary steps by issuing suitable instructions to all DCPs and SPS to ensure that while enforcing different provisions of MV Act, not to compound offence punishable under Section 184 (except using mobile phone while driving) and Section 185 (drunken driving) as the said offences are not compoundable under Section 200 of said Act,” Srinivas stated.

He also asked the police to ensure that people are not harassed under the amended MV Act.

“It has been brought to the notice of the Government that while enforcing the amended law, there have been instances of harassment by the police leading to public resentment," stated Srinivas.
