Two swimming trainers suspended

Monday, 10 June 2019 | PNS | BHUBANESWAR

Two swimming trainers were suspended on Sunday for their negligence, for which a teenage boy drowned at the swimming pool of the Bhubaneswar Club five days ago.

Action has been taken against the two trainers for lapses in their work by allowing a non-registered student of the club for taking swimming lesson, said club general manager Purnachandra Mishra.

However, the deceased boy Sandip Sahu’s family alleged foul play by the club authorities and suspected the role of police in the incident.

Even so many days after the boy died in the swimming pool, police are yet to give a copy of the FIR to the family. “It was not an accident but a planned murder,” alleged Sandip’s mother.

She said her son had deposited the admission fee for swimming classes at the Bhubaneswar Club 15 days ago, but his name was not enrolled in the register.

“Not registering his name in the official record for swimming classes was intentional. The murder was planned in such a way to make it appear as an accident,” she alleged.

Notably, Sandip, the only child of his parents from the Dumduma area on the city’s outskirts, drowned while taking swimming lesson on June 4 morning. Aiming to be a national level swimmer, he had gone to the posh club for practice during his summer vacation. His body was recovered from the pool a few hours after the swimming class.
