To provide better facilities for the passengers boarding trains from Dehradun railway station and arriving here, the railway authorities have been undertaking yard remodelling work for about a year and half now. At present, Dehradun railway station has only four platforms but soon one more platform will be made operational. Other than that, facilitating an increase in the number of coaches is also in process. According to official sources, around seven to eight thousand passengers board trains here daily during off-season time. After the remodelling and extension of coaches passengers will get relief from long waiting lists.

Station Superintendent of Dehradun Railway station Sitaram Sonkar said, “We have four platforms at present and are in the process of constructing one more. At present the trains arriving here have 12 to 13 coaches, we are planning to increase it up to 18 coaches. For that we are expanding the length of platforms too. This will provide considerable relief to the passengers from waiting list.”

Giving further details he said, “About 50 per cent of the line work is done and about 90 per cent of the signal and telegraph work is done. Just the construction of platform and a final cement work is to be done at the site.”

When asked about when the work will be completed he said, “After the construction work of double line between Haridwar and Laksar will be completed, the rest of the construction will start here. For which we will be given a block, during which trains will be cancelled.”

It is important to mention here that more than 25 trains operate from Dehradun railway station every day. With the increasing population in the city and the popularity of tourism in the state, the number of passengers arriving at and departing from this railway station on a daily basis has also increased considerably.
