Youngsters at a loss about issues, contestants

Monday, 13 May 2019 | GAYATHRI MANI | NEW DELHI

Even in this age of social media, youngsters who became eligible to vote in this election appeared to be ignorant as they were not aware about the names of the candidates and the issues before the people. At the same time, the elder voters, most of them un-educated were well versed with the general knowledge and correctly pronounced the names of sitting Member of Parliament (MPs), leaders and did not even missed the newly born parties.

Riya and Kirti, standing on the queue in the polling station at Wazirpur in Chandini Chowk constituency stood blank staring each other when asked about the name of sitting Member of Parliament (MP) of the constituency and the candidates in fray.

When asked about the issues in the national capital, Anju Mehta, a resident of Model Town who recently graduated from a private university said that issues does not matter as every party are on the same page," she said, adding that she voted anticipating a strong government at centre that can address the issues effectively. However, she was not even aware about the main political parties and their candidates who are contesting election from her constituency.

Similarly, Prakash Bansal (23), who runs a grocery shop at Mukherjee Nagar, said that he is simply following the pattern on which the family has been voting. "I do not care about candidates as they never turned back after winning election to solve the issues," he said.

Another youth said I voted for Congress candidate Yogesh Verma. Interestingly, there was no candidate with such name from Chandini Chowk constituency. However, JP Agarwal from congress, Harshavardhan from BJP and Pankaj Gupta from AAP is in fray for the Chandini Chowk seat.

Another voter Rajnish Asiwal from Shakur Basti, said, "I do not know what is the issue, my mother asked me to vote and having a Voter Identity is very useful at various place."

Further, many people just voted in the name of congress, BJP and AAP. "We do not know who is contesting from here but we know that either people will vote for Rahul ji or Modi ji," said Guddi.
