Youth dies in police custody, SI suspended

Tuesday, 23 July 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

The inhuman face of UP Police personnel was once again exposed when a 20-year-old man detained for illicit liquor trade died in Mainpuri jail, allegedly due to torture by the police during interrogation on Sunday.

Later, a probe was ordered and a sub-inspector was suspended.

As per reports, Chhotu alias Vinay and his brother were arrested in connection with illicit liquor trade by Kishni police in Mainpuri on Saturday. On Sunday, they were sent to jail where Chhotu fell ill and was taken to the prison hospital, where his condition deteriorated. He was later rushed to the district hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Claiming that the two were innocent, the family members of the deceased said that Chhotu was tortured by the police at Mainpuri Kotwali after which he died.

The autopsy report said that the deceased suffered 17 internal injuries and his liver was badly damaged.

Based on a complaint filed by Chhotu’s uncle Tilak Singh, an FIR was registered against sub-inspector Sohanpal Singh of Kotwali and the jail administration.

The sub-inspector was suspended and a probe was on to ascertain the facts.

Meanwhile, in another sensational killing in Shahjahanpur, a school teacher was sprayed with bullets by the husband of a colleague in the presence of several dozen teachers on Monday.

As per reports, basic shiksha adhikari of Shahjahanpur had convened a meeting of school teachers at National Population Register (NPR) Project office in Azeezpur at Nigohi block of the district to hand over shoes to be distributed amongst students.

During the meeting, a teacher of Bahadurpur primary school, Satyendra Sharma, had a heated argument with the husband of a woman teacher of Dheerath primary school. While some fellow teachers intervened, the woman teacher’s husband left the scene. However, within half-an-hour, he returned with four aides armed with country-made guns.

Sensing trouble, Satyendra jumped the office boundary and fled to save his life. However, the group chased and caught him and pumped five bullets in the victim’s chest and head.

After ensuring that Satyendra was dead, the assailants escaped.

The police later reached the spot and sent the body for autopsy and registered a case.

The police said that the woman teacher was appointed in Dheerath school where she complained that Satyendra teased and harassed her. Taking cognisance of the matter, the basic shiksha adhikari had suspended Satyendra and transferred him to Bahadurpur primary school.
