Political Tamil Nadu watched in awe on Wednesday a sitting DMK MLA crossing over to BJP even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was performing the Bhoomi Puja at Ayodhya for the construction of Lord Ram Temple there.
Ku Ka Selvam, representing the Thousand Lights constituency drove down to Kamalalayam, headquarters of Tamil Nadu BJP on Wednesday morning and took part in the special puja for Lord Ram performed there in connection with the Bhumi Puja at Ayodhya.
Though the local media had reported that Selvam was likely to cross over to the BJP, he had categorically denied such reports. On Wednesday morning,
DMK president M K Stalin suspended Selvam from the party for his Tuesday meeting with the BJP’s National President JP Nadda.
On receipt of the suspension order, Selvam accompanied by his close aides drove down to Kamalayalam where he was accorded a reception. BJP Tamil Nadu President Dr Murugan welcomed Selvam to the Hindutwa fold by draping him in a saffron robe.
“Many people are likely to ditch the DMK and cross over to the BJP in days to come. The DMK is run by the family members of Stalin. It is Udhayanidhi’s writ (Stalin’s son) that runs in the party. There are many persons waiting in the wings to leave the DMK,” said Selvamm.
Selvam is the first lawmaker in the DMK to leave the party and join the saffron brigade.
He is certain to loss his membership of the Legislative Assembly in the backdrop of the anti-defection law.
“I was disappointed because the party leadership did not listen to my request for a suitable post. Till 2017, it was Karunanidhi who was issuing orders. Then Stalin, his son, started issuing orders. Now it is Karunanidhi’s grandson who is the all-in-all of the party,” said Selvam who has put in more than two decades service for the Dravidian major.
