Friday, 23 October 2020 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

A female calf was born to a bison in Betla National Park on October 2 but her birth and growing were hidden from the outside world and on October 22, 20 days after her birth the deputy director North division PTR Kumar Ashish made the revelation.

Ashish said the female calf born on October 2 is going all fine and is learning the nuances of life from her mother who is very possessive and protective of her. Ashish said the mother and her calf has no problem as four of our trackers are after them taking every note of their body sign and movement.

On being asked as to why her birth was so kept a secret Ashish said, "This April - May month we lost 3 bison in the park and that had a very shattering experience for all of us and so when this new one arrived we wanted it have more days to it before telling the outside world that a new birth in bison has taken place in Betla National Park."

Asish said there is left only 50 to 60 bison in the park here and this is the only population of bison in Jharkhand as bison is not found anywhere else in Jharkhand than this Betla National Park.

Ashish said in 1990 PTR had around 400 bison and its number started declining gradually, faster.
