Alarmed with reports on the burial of 11 persons within minutes of their deaths, the Mau district administration carried out a probe to ascertain the reasons and tested sampled from the bodies for coronavirus infection.
Ordering a probe, District Magistrate of Mau, Gyan Prakash Tripathi, said that if it surfaced that the deceased were coronavirus infected, then stern action would be taken against officials of ward monitoring cell.
On Monday, a peace committee meeting was convened by the district magistrate to discuss safety measures to be taken in the wake of the festival season starting next month.
At the meeting, some participants raised the issue of burial of 11 bodies in the district within half-an-hour of deaths. After learning of the facts, Tripathi expressed concern and questioned the civic authorities, who were part of ward monitoring cell.
The civic body had earlier been asked to ensure that no one dying of coronavirus or suspected of being infected with it, be cremated or buried without conducting test.
The district magistrate then ordered a probe. Action would be initiated after the reports came in.
The bodies will be now exhumed to extract samples for coronavirus testing. In case the samples are found positive, then contact tracing will be done and those who came in contact with the deceased would be tested for infection.
