Heat wave alert by Met after Raipur sizzles at 45 degrees

Brace up for the first heat wave of the season on Monday.

With the day temperature on Sunday shooting up to 45 degrees Celsius in Raipur and to 45.8 degrees Celsius in Durg, the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a heat wave in Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur.

“Heat wave conditions are very likely at one or two pockets over Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur divisions of the state,” the IMD said.

“Heat wave is a condition when the maximum                temperature of a place shoots beyond 40 degrees and it is at least 4 degrees above the normal,” said Dr H.C. Chandra of IMD.

“The day temperature in almost all the weather monitoring stations in Chhattisgarh had crossed the 40-degree Celsius mark, which is at least 4 degrees above the normal. This fulfils the heat wave conditions,” he said.

He said the hot and dry air coming from the north-west direction is responsible for the scorching heat and the situation will continue for the next couple of days.

“Hot winds from the north-west, a clear sky and scarcity of moisture in the air are helping the mercury to shoot up. It could soar high in coming days,” said a weather scientist.

The IMD scientists also warned that the day temperature in Raipur could touch 45 degrees Celsius with a possibility of dust storm on Monday and Tuesday.
