The Kendrapada Municipality authority has set up a micro composting centre at city’s garbage dumping ground in Hajaribagicha, where heaps of garbage were littered over the years, with an aim to prepare organic compost which will be sold to farmers and locals.
In the absence of a solid waste management plant, the city’s garbage was earlier being dumped at the site for last several years, turning the lives of the nearby residents into a nightmare.
Meanwhile, the municipal authority has set up 14 big waste taps at the dumping yard in order to produce 5 tonne compost per day. About 42 days will be taken to produce 5 tonnes compost, informed municipality EO Debabrata Bal.
The civic body has already spent Rs 50 lakh for the infrastructure whereas plans are afoot to purchase spreader machine, grinding machine and screening machine for the micro compositing centre. A sum of Rs 30 to 40 lakh will be required for the purpose.
The compost later will be sold in packets at Rs 5 per kg to the farmers and locals through SHGs.
