Tension at RGH as patient dies due to ‘neglect’

Tuesday, 30 June 2020 | PNS | ROURKELA

Tension prevailed at the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) on Monday, a day after a 22-year-old youth died at the hospital on Sunday allegedly due to medical negligence.

The deceased, identified as Harischandra Kanthia, a resident of Malgodown Basti in Basanti Colony here, was the sole breadwinner of the family.

Harischandra was working in a cement factory here. On Sunday morning, he went to work but came back early when he felt chest pain.  As his pain worsened, his family got him admitted to the RGH at around 1 pm. He was administered saline by a staff nurse. At around 3 pm when he vomited and his condition worsened further, his sister Nikita requested a doctor and a nurse to check his health, but nobody allegedly responded on time. By the time the doctor went to the patent at around 4.30 pm, he had died.

Alleging medical negligence, Nikita lodged a complaint at the Raghunathpalli police station against the doctor and the nurse.

Early on Monday morning, irate locals in large numbers reached the hospital and staged a demonstration demanding an inquiry into the treatment lapses and arrest of those to be found guilty. Later, a team of senior police officials went to the spot to pacify the agitators. The cops also sent the body for postmortem.
