Af Army chief to visit India on July 27 to discuss security

Afghanistan Army chief General Wali Mohammad will hold wide-ranging discussions with Army chief General MM Naravane and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval during his two-day visit starting July 27 to New Delhi.

His visit comes at a time when the Afghan forces are fighting the Taliban which has controlled nearly two-third  of that country.

India and Afghanistan have long-standing defence ties in terms of training. India has also supplied some MI helicopters to Afghanistan. Incidentally, India has invested more than $3 billion in several projects related to infrastructure and welfare.

The two Army chiefs are likely to discuss the current situation prevailing in Afghanistan, sources said here on Monday.  The visit comes days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said dialogue was the only way to address the ongoing turmoil there.

India last week evacuated more than 50 of its diplomatic personnel from its consulate in Kandhar and brought them to New Delhi as a precautionary measure.  The step was taken in the backdrop of heavy fighting there.

Addressing a conclave of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) last week in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, he also proposed a three-point way forward to restore peace.

With the Taliban surging in many parts of the country, Jaishankar also said the international community is against the "seizure of power by violence and force" and will not "legitimise such actions".

Presenting his country's views on the issue, he had said "the world, region and the Afghan people all want the same end state".

He then outlined three points for restoring peace.  The first proposal is "an independent, neutral, unified, peaceful, democratic and prosperous nation."
