Laxity not cricket why Covid has spread: Expert

Monday, 29 March 2021 | Staff Reporter | RAIPUR

It is laxity on the part of the people and not cricket why there is a resurgence of Covid-19 in Chhattisgarh, Dr Rakesh Gupta, Chairman of the Medical Cell in the Congress, said on Sunday.

Those who are blaming the ‘Road Safety World Series T20’ cricket matches for the spread of the epidemic in the state are speaking without logic, he said.

If crowds are the reason, then states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Assam where electioneering is on should have seen the epidemic, said Dr Gupta.

But these states have not reported a spike although a second wave of Covid-19 has been reported in a few states. Additionally, the virus has not gripped Haridwar despite the presence of lakhs for Mahakumbh, he said in a statement.

Dr Gupta said there was a stage when the number of positive cases came down to below 100. People in Chhattisgarh thought that now wearing a mask, keeping physical distance or using of sanitizer was not need. This indiscipline, this laxity has led to the soaring numbers of Covid patients.

He added that in Chhattisgarh even health workers have shown less interest in vaccination. But with public awareness and a rise in the number of positive cases, the interest in vaccination has risen. This is why on Saturday more than 1 lakh got vaccinated.

Now, new strains of Covid-19 are being observed in the country with different symptoms. Therefore, taking assistance from qualified doctors is a must, he said.

Everyone should go for vaccination and adopt Covid appropriate behavior. Then only, the pandemic can be fought, he said.
