The administration in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district has extended the lockdown till April 19 in the battle against Covid-19, it was announced on Tuesday.

Durg Collector Sarveshwar Bhure said the lockdown has been extended by five days.

A press release quoted him as saying that the results of ongoing lockdown were effective and led to a fall in corona cases.

The Collector appealed to the people to cooperate with the authorities in checking the spread of Covid.

The original nine-day lockdown was imposed in the district from April 6 and it was to end on April 14.

Durg is one of the worst Covid-hit districts in Chhattisgarh.

The streets and markets have been deserted in Durg since April 6. Police teams are carrying out regular patrolling at important squares to prevent unnecessary movement of people.

On Monday, 1,591 fresh Covid cases were detected and 11 people died in the district, taking the death toll to 54.

Amid a surge in Corona cases and deaths, lockdown has been imposed in 20 districts including Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bemetara, Raigarh, Korba, Surguja, Surajpur, Gariaband, Janjgir-Champa, Bilaspur, Jashpur, Balod, Dhamtari, Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara, Mahasamund, Mungeli, Balrampur, Korea and Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi.
