In broad daylight, three bike-borne masked turbaned robbers on Saturday robbed and injured the cashier of a steel plant of Rs 31 lakh near Sarora in Urla industrial area of Raipur, police said.

The injured man was admitted in a private hospital while the accused are at large.

Raipur Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Yadav told The Pioneer that the incident took place in the morning when cashier Nityananda Chura alias Amit (32) was on his way to the plant in Sarora.

Eight to nine masked robbers turned up on three separate motorcycles. One of them hit him with a steel rod. They also tried to throw chilli powder in the cashier's eyes.

As the cashier lost control over the wheels and fell from the bike, the robbers looted the money totaling Rs 31 lakh kept in a bag and escaped, Yadav said.

The victim had withdrawn Rs 20 lakh from the bank for paying the labourers, contractors and truck drivers while he had Rs 11 lakh, the officer said.

The police are exploring all angles and have reportedly questioned some suspects, Yadav added.
