Odisha farmer unions hold protests on roads

Hundreds of farmers took to the roads across the State as part of the nationwide ‘Chakka Jam’ agitation on Saturday demanding repeal of the three farm laws and expressed solidarity with the farmers’ protest in New Delhi.

The farmers blocked prominent roads, State and National Highways and other important thoroughfares in all 30 districts, squatted and halted traffic, waved banners and placards, shouted slogans and sang devotional and patriotic songs amid tight security by police.

All Odisha  Kishan Sangharsha Coordination Committee members led by Suresh Panigrahi held a demonstration at the Master Canteen Square in Bhubaneswar. Later, the police detained many committee members during the demonstrations.

A similar demonstration was held at the Link road by the committee members  and various trade union led by Rabi Naryan Mallick and  Khageswar Sethy protesting the farm laws.

The Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union (BKMU) led by State secretary Sura Jena and AITUC members held a  ‘Chakka Jam’ stir at the Raj Mahal Square in Bhubaneswar expressing solidarity with the protesting farmers in Delhi.

The Akhil Bharat Krushak Sabha (AIKS) Odisha State Committee members led by Khirod Singh Deo also held a road blockade at Master Canteen Square in the city.

A musical  programme ‘Jai Kishan’ was held virtually here that appealed the countrymen to stand with the farmers  and support their demand.

The singers sang revolutionary farmer and patriotic songs in different languages, including Odia. The programme was coordinated by Debiprasad Prusti.
