The Hardoi police on Sunday booked Anita, a candidate for village panchayat head's post in upcoming elections, her husband Virendra Singh, who is the district president of Samajwadi Party, and six others for distributing ladoos to voters.
The accused along with their six aides have been booked for violation of the model code of conduct and violation of pandemic protocols.
Police also seized 398 packets of ladoos and two vehicles from the spot in Arwal police station area of the district. The police action came after 100 kgs rasgullas and jalebis were seized in Agra and Unnao respectively.
The police got a tip-off from the Alwar police station area of the district that the village panchayat head and her husband were trying to woo voters with packets of ladoos and immediately a team was sent there.
The accused have been booked on the charges of violation of People's Representative Act, Epidemic Diseases Act and Disaster Management Act, said the police.
On Sunday, in Hapur district of UP also, two persons were arrested for distributing ladoos to woo voters, while four others were arrested in the same district from Simbhawali police station area as they were distributing boxes of dates along with calendars and a plastic mug.
Last week, panchayat poll contestants in the state were booked for distributing sweets to woo voters to vote for them. Two quintal jalebis along with samosas were recovered in Unnao. An earth moving machine with spades for mixing ingredients to prepare ladoos were seized in Baghpat,  while 70 boxes of soan papdi and 387 boxes of boondi ladoos were recovered in Agra.
A senior police officer said that distributing sweets had now become the only option of those in the fray to go after voters during the upcoming polls because of crackdowns and arrest of those throwing illicit liquor parties.
The UP Police have seized 20 lakh litres of illicit liquor and arrested around 100 persons indulging in its smuggling in the last one month.
In the first phase of panchayat polls on April 15, voting will be held in Saharanpur, Ghaziabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Hathras, Agra, Kanpur Nagar, Jhansi, Mahoba, Prayagraj, Rae Bareli, Hardoi, Ayodhya, Shravasti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Jaunpur and Bhadohi districts.
