Punjab Min Randhawa seeks to rein in goons who attacked farmers

Saturday, 30 January 2021 | PNS | Chandigarh

Punjab Congress leader and Cabinet Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Friday asked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rein in bunch of cronies unleashed by BJP, while asserting that hooliganism by anti-social elements in the police presence at farmers’ peaceful agitation at Singhu border amounts to butchering democracy.

“The deplorable barbarism, so unashamedly displayed by BJP goons on the borders of national capital in order to derail the peaceful agitation, is a black spot in the annals of Indian democracy and the Prime Minister’s silence on the issue amounts to condoning the acts of such rogue elements,” said Randhawa

Pointing out further, Randhawa said that the hooliganism by the BJP supporters in the presence of police has resulted in democratic norms being butchered.

“At first, the Union Government branded the agitating farmers as ‘Urban Naxals’, ‘Terrorists’ and ‘Khalistani’ in order to stifle the voices emanating from all over the country against the draconian farm laws and when these tactics didn’t worked, then the BJP has stooped to an all time low level of intimidating the farmers through its hoodlums,” he quipped.

Patting the farmers on their back, the Minister congratulated them for exhibiting restraint till now thereby winning the hearts of common masses, and on the other hand, foiling the nefarious designs of the Union Government by displaying mature approach at the Ghazipur and Singhu borders since last night.

“The Central Government is indulging in sheer demonstration of muscle power using local people as pawns,” said Randhawa adding that the farmers are waging a peaceful struggle which is the biggest USP of their war against black farm laws but the Union Government not being able to digest this, is resultantly adopting reprehensible measures with a view to torpedo the just movement time and again.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA from Patti Harminder Singh Gill lashed out at the BJP Government at the Centre for resorting to vile tactics and sending its goons to uproot the tents of the farmers by giving them sticks and inciting them to throw stones, which is an affront to democracy to suppress the farmers’ movement.

Gill said that those who vandalized the tents of the farmers should also be booked as the law was the same for all. He said that there should also be an enquiry into who they are, where they came from and who sent them.

“It was reprehensible for the President to praise the Agriculture Bills during his address today, while during the meeting with the farmers, the Union Government was ready to rectify the errors in these Bills. When these erroneous farmers’ bills were praised by the President, it is not fair, which is misleading the Parliament and the country,” he added.
