A rape victim committed suicide in Sambhal on Thursday after her family was harassed and threatened to withdraw the police case.
According to reports, a girl hailing from Bahjoi locality of Sambhal was raped by a local youth in August last year after which she lodged a report and the local police arrested the accused and sent him to jail.
The accused is still in jail.
Sources said that ever since the cops arrested the accused, his family and cohorts were putting pressure on the victim's family to withdraw the case.
For the last few days, they mounted pressure on the family and even threatened them with their lives if they did not withdraw the case and went ahead to record their statement in the court.
The victim, finding the life of her family members in danger, especially after learning about the Hathras incident, decided to end her own life. She hanged herself from the ceiling of her house on Thursday to end the ordeal of her family.
Her family alleged that the girl committed suicide due to pressure of the rape accused to withdraw case.
A case has been registered in this regard by the police and the body was sent for post-mortem. Further investigations are on.
Barely three days ago, a farmer was killed in Hathras for daring to lodge a report against the assailant for molesting his daughter.
