The Chhattisgarh Police said on Tuesday it had arrested two persons on charges of smuggling 440 pieces of rough diamonds valued at Rs 50 lakhs in Gariaband district.
Speaking to The Pioneer over telephone, Gariaband Superintendent of Police Bhojraj Patel said Subhash Mandal (43) and Ujjawal Chandrakar (30) were both residents of Raipur city.
Acting on a tip, they were caught in the Fingeshwar police station area on Monday night. Learning that the accused were headed from Gariaband’s Chhura town towards Raipur on a scooter (CG-04, KR-4813), the police intercepted them and recovered the rough diamonds of different sizes.
The scooter and two mobile phones were also seized.
The accused illegally brought the diamonds in Gariaband and they planned to sell it, Patel said.
