At least seven Indian Army jawans died and 19 others received critical injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in fell into the Shyok River, 25 km ahead of Thoise, in Turtuk sector of Ladakh on Friday.
According to official sources, all 19 injured personnel have been airlifted to the Western command’s hospital in Chandimandir, Panchkula, for advanced medical treatment.
The accident took place around 9 am, official sources said. At the time of the incident, soldiers were on their way to a forward location in sub-sector Hanif.
According to field reports, the Army vehicle fell into the Shyok River to a depth of approximately 50 to 60 feet from the road.
Local teams comprising rescue workers and medical staff from the Partapur field hospital were rushed to the spot to provide immediate medical aid to the injured soldiers.
“Seven soldiers died on the spot while 19 others were later airlifted to the Chandimandir command hospital,” official sources said.
