Unless the FPTP (First-Past-the-Post) system of election is not replaced by Mixed Proportional Representation (MPR) system of election, the Indian democracy can never be inclusive and healthy, said Freethought of Indian (FPI) general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire.

PM Modi is having a wrong impression that Indian democracy is being threatened by dynastic politics. That is why he has directed the RMP, a think tank of the RSS-BJP, to hold a national seminar on the theme of ‘Dynastic Politics.’ The seminar of the RMP will send its recommendations to the Election Commission of India. But, the national exercise by the RMP is not going to make Indian democracy a healthier or a better one, he said.

The Indian democracy has become worthless, and “unrepresentative” of the people because of the defective and unjust FPTP system of election according to which elections are being conducted for the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Election, the BJP got 37% of the popular vote. But instead of capturing 200 seats in the Lok Sabha, it captured 303 seats, that is, 55.8% of seats of the Lok Sabha. Thus by this system of election, the BJP has got an excess of 103 Members in the House of the People. This is nothing but political robbery of the worst type.

“This political robbery should go lock, stock, and barrel. If the RSS-BJP Think Tank is really a “Think Tank” then it must advise the Modi Government to introduce the Mixed PR (MPR) System of Election that is going on nicely in several countries like Germany, New Zealand, Denmark etc. Had there been MPR System in India, the Congress would have got 106 seats, not a paltry 54 seats, in the Lok Sabha of 2019,” said FPI general secretary Voltaire.
