‘Thanks CM for Rs 2K cr grant to VSSUT’

Thursday, 22 September 2022 | NIMAI CHARAN SAHU | SAMBALPUR

Following a declaration of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for Rs 2,000 crore grant for VSSUT Burla, the staff, students,

faculty, alumni and Vice Chancellor Prof B Majhi thanked the CM.

According to sources, VSSUT VC Prof Majhi had prepared an ‘Institute Development Plan’ (IDP) and submitted before the Government on June 18 this year. Accordingly, the CM sent a delegation of three senior officers including the Chief Secretary, Industry Secretary and 5T Secretary on August 25 to VSSUT who submitted an ‘Expansion Project Report’ (EPR) to the CM. And on September 17, the CM declared a mammoth grant of Rs 2,000 crore to prepare VSSUT as a World Class Technical University at par with IITs and NITs.

Recalling the history, the staff members in a Press meet said that in the year 2004, the CM had made attempts to persuade the Vajpayee Government at the Centre to upgrade the UCE to an IIT, which couldn’t be materialized though. But undeterred, the State Government through a bill in the Assembly in 2009 upgraded it to a university.

But the problems began from there since the infrastructure for 300 students couldn’t be sufficient for 5,000 students. But during the Diamond Jubilee celebration in 2018, the CM had assured of all support to the institute to revive its glory, they told.

“With the grant of Rs 2,000 crore, the VSSUT will have seven schools and will offer 24 engineering programmes keeping the present trend in

mind,” VC Majhi said.

Each school will have all modern equipment and facilities including smart classrooms as per the international standards since fund crunch

is a matter of past now, he added.

He further informed that the annual intake of B Tech students will be enhanced to 2,000 which is 1,000 now. Hence, the total strength of the university will be 10,000, the VC said.

The excited students also expressed their thanks to the CM who thinks for improvement of technical education and eco-system at VSSUT. There was equal enthusiasm from the alumni also who gathered here in respect of their alma mater.
