A hike in holding tax by the State Government has triggered widespread resentment in Baripada Municipality. Several opposition parties staged a mass demonstration here on Wednesday against the move.
The demonstrators, who gathered in front of the Collectorate building, demanded immediate withdrawal of the hike. If their plea is not heard of, the agitation will be intensified, they warned. Later, a memorandum addressed to the State Chief Minister was submitted to the District Administration and the Baripada Municipality Executive Officer.
Leaders of different opposition political parties including Congress, CPI CPIM, JMM and AAP were seen actively participating in the agitation.
