Monday, 13 June 2022 | PNS | Chandigarh/Amritsar

Amidst the opposition attack against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Punjab Government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the State, the holy city of Amritsar was rocked by three killings within 24 hours in three separate incidents.

A day after a person was shot over a land dispute and a woman was strangulated to death, a Dubai-returned 35-years-old man was allegedly shot in front of his wife and two children in Amritsar on Sunday morning when they were on the way to the Golden Temple.

The victim, identified as Harinder Singh of Chheharta locality in Amritsar city, was working in Dubai as a driver and returned home just 12-13 days ago. He was going to the Golden Temple for the first time after returning from Dubai, on a bike.

The entire incident was caught on camera. As per the CCTV footage, the attackers began to follow Harinder and his family soon after they left their home. The police said that Harpinder Singh (35), a resident of Ghanpur Kale, was going to pay obeisance at Golden Temple along with his wife and two daughters at 3:30 am when he was intercepted by a couple of masked bike-riders.

As per the police’s official statement, when Harinder, along with his wife and two daughters, was going to Harmandir Sahib on a motorcycle at around 3:30 am, two bike-borne masked men came from the backside. They pushed their motorcycle, on which they all fell on the road, one of them opened fire at Harinder and took his purse and mobile phone and ran away.

Harinder’s wife said that the attackers tried to snatch their valuables and he resisted which led to a scuffle during which they shot him. Harinder was brought dead at a hospital, said the police, adding that they are investigating all the angles, including snatching in the case.

Harinder had arrived in India from Dubai only a week ago.

It was the second murder with a gunshot in Amritsar city in the last 24 hours. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, one person had died while another sustained injuries after a group opened fire over a land dispute. The accused is reported to be the son of a female municipal councillor.

The police said that scuffle between two groups broke in the Sultanwind area following which a person, identified as Gurpartap Singh Raja, died while another person, Rishi Chaudhry, sustained injured. The shots were allegedly fired by a person identified as Charandeep Singh.

An eye witness Sarju Dixit informed the media that the alleged accused was the son of a female municipal councillor who allegedly threatened Gurpartap Singh Raja with dire consequences over a land dispute.

He said that as the tension brewed between Raja and Charandeep, he himself called the SHO asking to send a police force. Even during the police presence, the heated verbal dual turned into a gun battle leaving Raja seriously injured who was rushed to the hospital where he breathed his last.

Assistant sub-inspector Harbans Singh informed the media that Raja and Rishi were injured by a person who was identified as Charandeep. He informed that Raja had died while Rishi who had sustained injuries was under treatment.

On Sunday, police reportedly arrested Charandeep Singh. Meanwhile, the condition of Rishi is reported to be stable.

Earlier on June 1, a bank employee Lovepreet Singh had died after a group of boys opened fire killing him and injuring his friend Gursimran Singh near Khalsa College.

On early Sunday morning, the body of a woman running a grocery shop was found in her shop. The woman has been identified as Kamini Devi. Her relative, Geetanjali, said that her neighbours were suspicious of some mishap when Kamini didn’t open the shop and found her body lying in the house.

Police sources informed that the burglars had strewn the household stuff of late Kamini’s house before allegedly strangulating her. Police had taken the body of Kamini into custody for conducting an autopsy. No arrests have been made so far.

BLIND MURDER CASE SOLVED WITHIN 12 HRS — WIFE CONNIVED WITH PARAMOUR

Amritsar police on Sunday claimed to have solved the murder case of Dubai-returned man within 12 hours of the incident. The police claimed that deceased Harinder Singh’s wife Satnam Kaur connived with her paramour to kill her husband after he got to know about her illicit relations.

On Sunday morning, two bike-borne masked men shot Harinder when he was on his way to the Golden Temple along with his wife and children at 3:30 am. Initially, the police believed it to be a robbery, but within 12 hours, the police managed to expose all layers of the case. After investigations, it has been found that his wife who got her husband killed.

“Wife Satnam Kaur, along with her friend Arshdeep Singh, planned to murder Harinder. For the same, he is also took along one Varinder Singh of Kale village. The police have recovered both the pistol and the motorcycle,” said the police official.

Harinder was working as a driver in Dubai from the past 12-13 years; and had returned to Amritsar around 12-13 days back.

On his wife Satnam Kaur’s statement, a case was registered. “During investigation, it was found that it was Satnam Kaur, who, with the help of Arshdeep Singh and Varinder Singh, got her husband murdered because Satnam Kaur was having an extra-marital affair with Arshdeep Singh, about which Harinder Singh came to know, when he came back from Dubai,” said the police’s official statement,

It added, “Harinder started keeping a vigil on his wife on the doubts of having an affair, which is why Satnam Kaur got her husband murdered, with the help of Arshdeep Singh. Satnam Kaur and Arshdeep Singh gave a total of Rs 2.70 lakhs to Varinder Singh to murder her husband Harinder Singh.”

The police has registered an FIR under sections 302, 379-B (2), 34 of India Penal Code (IPC), and sections 25-54-59 of the Arms Act.
