Unparliamentary comments not acceptable, says Yogi

Thursday, 26 May 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had to intervene to ensure calm in the UP assembly following unparliamentary remarks by leader of opposition Akhilesh Yadav against Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya during the proceedings on Wednesday.

The chief minister urged the speaker to expunge the unparliamentary remarks made by the leader of opposition from the proceedings of the House.

"Kya tum apne pitaji ki sampati bech kar sadak banwate ho aur rashan dete ho " Tum chup raho. (Do you sell your father's property and build a road and distribute free food grains to people? You just shut up), said an irate Akhilesh Yadav in response to a comment by Maurya during a debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor Anandiben Patel’s address to the joint sitting of UP legislature on May 23.

Maurya had questioned the claims of Akhilesh Yadav on the development done in Uttar Pradesh during the last five years.

"It appears that Akhilesh Yadav constructed the four-lane highway, Lok Bhawan, UP secretariat and other projects by selling his ancestral land in Saifai (native town of Akhilesh Yadav),” he said.

Akhilesh Yadav lost his cool and addressed deputy chief minister as 'tum', leading to loud protests by the treasury benches.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately intervened and calmed the frayed tempers in the House, saying, "Use of unparliamentary words can never be allowed in the House. I urge the Speaker to expunge those remarks of the leader of opposition so that it does not become a precedent for future generations and send a negative message across the nation."

"Maintaining the dignity of the House during debate should always be on the top of our minds and thought processes. Every member has the right to put his/her viewpoint in the House. We may agree or disagree but there is no place for words like 'tu tu mai mai' in parliamentary democracy,” Yogi said.

"If opposition members make unparliamentary comments then how can they not expect a befitting response from treasury benches?  Running commentary and threatening remarks from opposition benches while the deputy chief minister was speaking is unacceptable,” the chief minister said.

"Such behaviour violates the dignity of the House .Akhilesh Yadav is the leader of the opposition and leader of the second largest party in the House. I make a humble submission that it’s not the duty of treasury benches alone,  it is also the duty of the opposition to maintain dignity which will be in the best interests of the institution of legislature,” Yogi said.

After order was restored in the House, Keshav Prasad Maurya resumed his speech and said, "No matter how much you (Akhilesh Yadav) brag about your development, but people of UP have rejected you and elected the BJP for a second consecutive term. People of UP will continue rejecting you even in 2027 like they did in 2017, 2019, and 2022."

Maurya further claimed, "An astrologer has predicted that the SP has no scope of returning to power for the next 25 years. You are destined to sit in the opposition till at least 2027. You make a tweet to claim credit for every project started by the BJP government. If you were so sincere, what prevented you from completing those projects.’’

Referring to caste-based divisive politics of Samajwadi Party, Maurya said, "Hum dudh mein chini milate haim aap dudh fadte hai (We unify the society and you divide the society). Yes, you might have started some works, but just announcing schemes, does not mean that you have completed them. Stop being 'Announcement Ministers'. We have implemented all the schemes."
