Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will end his ongoing `Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' at the historic Chaityabhoomi at Dadar in north-central Mumbai, where late Dr B R Ambedkar was cremated a day after he passed away on December 6, 1956.
During the last leg of his 4,080-km 64-day Yatra, Gandhi will traverse through part of Maharashtra from March 12 to 17, before culminating his yatra at Chaityabhoomi.
The choice of Chaityabhoomi --- officially known as Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Mahaparinirvan Memorial --as the culmination point for Gandhi’s yatra should be seen in the light of the fact that the place is dedicated to the memory of late Dr Ambedkar. The place has a bust of the leader and statue of Lord Gautam Buddha.
Chaityabhoomi is located in the neighbourhood of the historic Shivaji Park, which had in the past been a venue for gatherings of freedom fighters in British India and which in the post independence period was the focal point of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement that led to the formation of the present Maharashtra state in 1960. Several top leaders of different political parties have addressed rallies and meetings from here.
After the culmination of the Yatra at Chaityabhoomi, leaders of the Opposition front I.N.D.I.A will kick-start their campaign for the Lok Sabha polls at a grand rally at the historic Shivaji Park.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhi and other Opposition leaders are expected to address the rally at Shivaji Park.
It may be recalled that then Congress President Sonia Gandhi had addressed a grand rally at Shivaji Park on Congress foundation day on
December 28 2003 - marking the launch of the Congress' 2004 Lok Sabha poll campaign after which the UPA headed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh came to power in the country.
In fact, the Congress had announced the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on December 27, 2023, on the eve of the foundation day, when Gandhi and Kharge addressed a rally in Nagpur.
