For the first time in the State, a team of gastroenterologists at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital (IMS&SH) here has performed an endoscopic ultrasound-guided imaging of the chest cavity and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) on a 45-year-old person to facilitate investigation into his ailment.
Sukesh Patnaik, who works as a magician in the US, came to the hospital recently seeking relief from his two-year-old ailment.
Investigations with the aid of the advanced equipment revealed that he had several enlarged glands in his chest cavity, an unusual phenomenon.
Though he had visited several hospitals in the country, nowhere a thorough investigation could be done because of the complicated location of these glands.
The team of Dr Subash Chandra Samal, Head of Department of Gastrointestinal, liver and Hepatobiliary diseases and Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu and Dr Pratap Behera, Associate Professors, conducted the procedure.
The patient underwent real time endoscopic ultrasound-guided imaging and FNA and tissues sent for cytological analysis. He was discharged the same day from the hospital.
This procedure could also have been done through CT guidance, but because of the beating heart and large blood vessels being on the path, performing this invasive procedure by other means involved risk, Dr MK Sahu said.
The line of treatment of the patient would be decided after the pathological reports are available, he said. Endoscopic ultrasonography is a recent advanced technology which helps image deeper structures very clearly and enables performing of various invasive procedures while eliminating the risks involved. This facility is available, for the first time, in the IMS and SUM Hospital in Odisha.
