Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman was on Tuesday unanimously elected to the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh Assembly.
As Tuesday was the last day of filing nominations to the lone seat and no other party fielded any candidate, Sitharaman’s unanimous election has become a mere formality.Sitharaman, who originally hails from Andhra Pradesh, was inducted into the Narendra Modi Cabinet last month though she was not a member of any House of Parliament. State’s ruling Telugu Desam Party, an ally of the BJP had announced its support to Sitharaman. She was fielded for the seat vacated due to the death of former Chief Minister N Janardhan Reddy.
