It's low for a politician to use the word 'neech'

Thursday, 08 May 2014 | Sharad Chaturvedi | Via email

The use of the word ‘neech' is frowned upon in India, just as the use of the word ‘Negro' is worldwide. Reportedly, Ms Priyanka Vadra used the term ‘neech' to describe Mr Narendra Modi's politics. This is, of course, nothing new in the dictionary of the anti-Modi brigade which has used terms like ‘Gangu Teli', ‘napunsak', ‘kutte ka bhai’, etc. This kind of language reflects the inability of the Congress, whose leaders have tried to outdo one another in their crass remarks against the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, to compete with Mr Modi on the plank of good governance and development.

Now that Mr Modi has retorted, the Congress has retaliated by claiming that the remarks have been misinterpreted. We must have respect for all castes and religions, but there is no point in symbolism or running down one another's beliefs on the basis of caste and religion. let us all learn to be more civilised and respectful towards others.
