DGP orders probe after reports sought through RTI Act

Friday, 31 October 2014 | PNS | Lucknow

Director General of police ordered a probe after some reports sought through Right To Information (RTI) Act, embarrassed the entire Department. In a RTI reply, the district policemen reportedly blamed the western culture, mobile phones and lack of entertainment as prime reasons for rising cases of rape and atrocities against women in the state.

‘`We have asked the zonal police heads to probe into the alleged report sought through RTI and report back to the Director General of Police(DGP) for further necessary action in the matter,’’ disclosed Inspector General ( law and Order), Satish Ganesh, while trying to save the Department from further embarrassment. He clarified that the controversial report has not been prepared at the DGP head quarter level and hence they are not in position to comment on the contents of it.  The RTI information was prepared separately by various districts, he said while talking to media persons here on Thursday evening.  He said that appropriate action would be taken after the investigation is completed.

Earlier, police gave this information on a Right to Information(RTI) query sought by an activist in Meerut recently seeking information about the reason for rise of women atrocities in UP. Police of 62 districts gave the replies citing several reasons for the crime. Policemen from Nasirpur in the Firozabad district blamed rapes on the ‘lack of entertainment options.’ The police in the Moradabad district said television and vulgar

advertisements cause rapes while the Firozabad police also added that the way women dress tempts ‘men with wrong intentions.’

In Allahabad, policemen posted at Parvai listed these reasons for rape - ‘women’s clothes, appearance, television, mobile phones and vulgar songs.’  In Meerut, policemen reportedly said the increased use of electronic devices and the deluge of information through digital media was dangerous and too much to handle.  Police stations in Etawah suggested that too much socializing between boys and girls led to such crimes. Policemen in Hapur mentioned ‘illegal relationships and vulgar telecasts.’  However, policemen generally claimed that mobile phones are a common threat as they have the general view that these instruments are a big factor in rising sexual crimes.
