In order to curb cases of anomalies during evaluation, Kolhan University has introduced OMR sheet (optical mark recognition) for examinees of final year graduation along with bar codes on their answer sheets from the examination that starts tomorrow (Friday). For the first time, the Kolhan University has introduced OMR sheets and bar codes on answer sheets to ensure that results are announced on time without any delay and also to keep a check on confidentiality during the evaluation.
The decision was revealed by the vice-chancellor of Kolhan University, RPP Singh, who conducted a meeting of all the controller of examination in colleges and examination centres to help them understand the new system. “We want to adopt modern technology to ensure that the examinations and evaluation are free and fair. We have been trying to introduce the system for long and this is the first time that university students will experience it. The students will also benefit from the initiative,” said S.C. Dash, registrar, Kolhan University.
According to the officials of the university, on the top of the page of the answer sheet will be the OMR sheet and barcode where students will have to enter their names, roll number and other detail. The same barcode will also be printed on rest of the pages. After the student submits the copy after completing the answers and the examination centre sends the copy to the university, the latter will keep the topmost page that includes students’ details and will send the rest to the evaluators.
“The new bar-coded system will maintain anonymity of students and better confidentiality in the evaluation process,” said the official. When the evaluation is over, the tabulation and preparation of the mark sheets of the individual students will be done by matching the bar codes on the OMR sheets and the answer sheets. The University felt it necessary to put bar codes on answer sheets to curb chances of undue influence by dishonest examinees or guardians on examiners and other officials responsible in handling the papers for evaluation, a source said.
“It is essential to maintain secrecy about the personal information of examinees in such a situation. The new bar-coded model of answersheets will help us maintain such secrecy,” the official said. Kolhan University was established in 2009. It runs 25 colleges include 14 constituent colleges, eight affiliated colleges and two minority ones.
